The
Solid Waste/Environmental Committee of the Acadia Parish Police Jury
met in public session at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2002, in
the Courthouse Building, Police Jury Meeting Room, Crowley.
It was motioned and duly seconded that all action items contained in
this report were taken, reviewed and discussed by the Solid
Waste/Environmental Committee and are to be presented as agenda
items. Motion carried.

The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Catherine LaCombe.
Chairperson LaCombe noted those in attendance and read
correspondence from Mayor Petitjean from Rayne regarding the subject
of yard waste and waste out of compliance on City streets.
Crowley Mayor Isabella Delahoussaye, in attendance at the meeting,
described how city waste problems differed from rural areas. She
said city hall receives an average of 10 to 15 calls per day from
people needing noncompliance waste picked up.
Donald “Gus” Dugas, representative of BFI Waste Services, described
how yard waste was managed in Lafayette Parish.
Mayor Delahoussaye elaborated on the problems with trees in the
city, particularly following stormy weather.
Mr. Dugas offered to survey the volumes of waste not being picked up
within the cities to determine the magnitude of the problem.
City Councilman Buatt explained that on occasion properly cut limbs
were being left next to trash cans.
It was also pointed out that there was no service at vacant lots.
Juror Cecelia Broussard asked the Mayors in attendance if a
reimbursement for the work being done by the Municipalities would be
in order.
A motion was offered and approved to recommend providing roll-off
containers to the cities of Crowley, Rayne and Church Point and
further authorize the Secretary to meet with BFI representatives and
Parish Mayors to determine an acceptable method of compensation for
extraordinary cleanup.
Mrs. Jo Cart asked when recycling in the Parish would be considered.
THERE BEING NO FURTHER BUSINESS TO COME BEFORE THE COMMITTEE,
THE PRESIDENT ADJOURNED THE MEETING UNTIL THE NEXT REGULARLY
SCHEDULED COMMITTEE MEETING.
