Architect Ron Lawson reviewed the plans and procedures for
implementing the improvement phases to comply with current ADA and
Fire Marshall Codes in the Courthouse Building.
Bids were taken to make improvements to the public access areas
including doorways, handrails and air conditioning modifications.
Only one bid was received which greatly exceeded budgeted funds.
Alternative pricing of work provided by floor was considered. The
sole bidder was willing to consider contracting for phases of the
work.
The Committee recommends awarding the compliance work for only the
third floor improvements in addition to the exterior handrails in
the amount of $75,956 to E. L. Habetz Builders, Inc., and amend the
2003 Budget to include the additional expenditures.
Mr. Lawson also described minor modifications that may become
necessary to comply with Fire Marshall requirements as part of the
handrails accessing the Health Unit in Church Point.
It was suggested that Mr. Lawson prepare a cost estimate to lower
the ceiling in Courtroom A as part of continued improvement to that
area of the Courthouse.
Maintenance and improvements to the fourth floor of the Courthouse
was discussed. Mr. Lawson pointed out that acceptable fire exits did
not exist. A report was presented on damage estimates to public
buildings due to Hurricane Lili. The report was presented to FEMA
for consideration wherein approximately $13,000 qualified for
reimbursement not including $25,000 worth of estimated damages at
the LeGros Airport.
Reference was made to a report of leaks at the Rice Arena. The
Committee requested an update for the next regular meeting.
Repairs to the roof on the Recycling Building was discussed. The
Committee suggested checking into repairs as opposed to replacing
the roof.
THERE BEING NO FURTHER BUSINESS TO COME BEFORE THE COMMITTEE,
THE PRESIDENT ADJOURNED THE MEETING UNTIL THE NEXT REGULARLY
SCHEDULED COMMITTEE MEETING.
