RESOLUTION
BY MESSRS: A
J CREDEUR AND ALTON STEVENSON
WHEREAS, a Committee has been
created in Acadia Parish, with the aim of abolishing the Acadia
Parish Police Jury in order to replace it with a more politically
oriented form of Parish government, and
WHEREAS, the Acadia Parish
Police Jury was not consulted, nor did it have a voice in the
formation of said Committee, and
WHEREAS, the Committee, with
much fanfare, imported political figures to speak on the virtues of
the President-Council form of Parish government while at the same
time slamming the Police Jury System of Parish government,
and
WHEREAS, it has been noted
that only those who have personally benefitted from, or hope to
benefit from, a President-Council form of Parish government, have
been invited to speak, and
WHEREAS, it has always been
relatively easy for an ambitious politician to mislead an uninformed
electorate into believing that what is best for the politician is
also good for the people, while history has proven that what is best
for an ambitious politician is seldom good for the people.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
that the Acadia Parish Police Jury commission a study to
investigate, spell out and truthfully reveal, the merits or failings
of the various types of Parish governments. This study at the same
time, to include any and all feasible methods that might further
improve the efficiency of our Parish management, or which may prove
attractive to major industries seeking a home in the South.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that
the Acadia Parish Police Jury Legislative Committee be empowered,
authorized and directed to name an independent Citizen’s Committee
to conduct this study. The Citizen’s Committee to make its findings
available to this Police Jury and the general public on an interim
basis as the study progresses, with final action to be taken by the
Acadia Parish Police Jury at the conclusion of the Citizen’s
Committee’s final report and recommendations.
